Boston Chapter Event: Friday Morning Coffee Hour - Beyond the QuiltsFriday, May 14, 2021, 10‑11am EDT
“Quilting connects us to our ancestors, preserves our memories, and gives us a way to connect with generations to come.”
Sisters In Stitches Joined By The Cloth is New England's only quilt guild dedicated to preserving the art, history, culture and traditions of African-American quilts throughout the African Diaspora. "Beyond The Quilts" will offer an in-depth conversation with several guild members, who will share their stories about what or who inspired them to make their quilts, pertaining to Cloth, Social Justice, Family History documentation, Music, Poetry, Art and Literature.
As the guild’s website explains: “The art of quilting has traveled across oceans, survived 400 years of slavery and has been carried down by generations of our family and friends. Over the centuries, we of African descent have joined together to make quilts as a way of sharing our joys, sorrows, traditions and to celebrate our history.”
Since 1997, guild members have been educating the general public about their work via quilt demonstrations, quilt exhibits and presentations at numerous locations throughout New England, such as the Martha's Vineyard NAACP Annual Scholarship Tea, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the New England Quilt Museum, the Renaissance High School, the Worcester Pop-Up Art Gallery and the PVMA Museum in Deerfield, MA.
Please register by Thursday at 5:00 pm. Zoom link will be sent thursday eve.
