What we don't know and would never imagine about prison conditions in Massachusetts. (A Peek into Prisons in America)

Learn more about this important issue and what you might do

This is a pivotal time for criminal justice reform in MA because the US Department of Justice (DOJ) recently completed an investigation into conditions in MA prisons and found many ways in which MA violates prisoners' constitutional protections - to such an extent the Boston Globe described the abuses as “tales of neglect and deprivation and human callousness so disturbing as to be unconscionable in a modern prison setting.” (November 27)

Per the Globe, the DOJ findings could lead to a consent decree overseen by a federal monitor, as recently happened in Virginia, which would be an important hard won reform.
