Enjoy a live, interactive seminar brought to us directly from Kyoto, Japan and learn about the Secrets of Kyoto Geishas! Context Travel is a network of scholars and specialists whose aim is to invite travelers off the tourist track and into the real life of the people, history, and culture of the world's greatest cities. Context Conversations is a way to continue the dialogue from home and designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels. TTN is pleased to announce that we have arranged for a series of live events, just for our members and their guests, at a fraction of the normal cost.
Secrets of Kyoto Geishas will be led by Dr. Gavin James Campbell a Professor of History at Doshisha University. Dr. Campbell has lived in Kyoto for 19 years and avidly participates in Kyoto geisha culture. He has also led Context tours in Kyoto for the last seven years.
Kyoto is a city of matchless beauty and cultural depth, and few embody those qualities better than the geisha. Meaning a "person of art," the geisha dedicate years to perfecting traditional skills, from music and dance, to tea ceremony and flower arranging. For centuries, the geisha world has been closed to all but a handful. Our journey will take us behind the fantasy into the dance studios, the dressing rooms, and the boarding houses where the geisha learn to weave a spell of beauty and enchantment. We will learn why women still choose this path and trace the profession's raucous and sometimes painful history. A Q&A period will follow the presentation.
Registrants will receive a link to sign into the event approximately one week prior to the event date.
