Thriving at Age 70 and Beyond
A recently published book, “70Candles! Women Thriving in Their 8th Decade,” inspired me to take a closer look at how I’m doing as I approach 75 and how I might make the most of the years to come. It would be a good idea for women in my age cohort to do likewise. With a quarter of American women age 65 expected to live into their 90s, there could be quite a few years to think about.

Single? No Kids? Don’t Fret: How to Plan Care in Your Later Years

Ms. Peveler, 71, who is divorced and childless, said she was determined not to let fear of an uncertain future get the best of her.

To help avoid the potential perils of a solitary old age, Ms. Peveler is carrying out a multipronged, go-it-alone plan. A key part of it was to find a small community where she could make friends and walk nearly everywhere, without worrying about the hazards of ice and snow.

The Joy of Making New Friends
The year I turned 60 my life collapsed like a bridge built by a crooked contractor and it didn’t take long to realize that solving my most pressing practical problems had surfaced a pressing emotional problem. Its name was loneliness, and I could only think of two ways to solve it. I could throw myself the world’s least festive pity party. Or I could do whatever it took to make some new friends.
